Ranidaphobia - Fear of Frogs

Most people think frogs are cute, some think they are ugly, and others don't care either way. And then there are those who have learned to be phobic of them, and I am one on the list.

I’ve never been scared to frogs since childhood. I remembered playing with the toads in the garden under the rain to dissecting frogs during my biology class. Not until I experienced one shameful incident.

One summer vacation, after skinny dipping (yeah right!) in the pacific beach, I went to a mucky toilet for a shower. Had no choice but to tarry myself for an hour in this makeshift booth, mindfully aware of the existence of sneakers. There are a lot of holes enough to expose your naked glory. Haha … As if any one dares? Anyways, I still revealed myself since I am not comfy bathing in any suit. Mind you, this isn’t a public bath. Now halfway my shower time, the lights went off – brownout! So I had to endure sightless scrubbing and swabing all the way through. Then there’s a rock hard thing I felt near my foot. Knowing that I am on the beach, I presume that it’s nothing but a hard rock. I took no heed to this thing until I heard chorus of croaking and ribbits! Damn! Frogs really calls to attract me. (Are they aware I’m in the nude?) Imagine yourself in the middle of nothingness, blind and naked in a 2x2 sq meter room, this one really frightens me… a lot. I still paid no attention to it and continued with the rubbing. I dropped my soap (this strikes a lot of uncool incidents); I worked my hand to this jagged floor (untiled) until I reached the boulder. Followed by higher pitch rum of a frog calling for distress and in a very unfortunate coincidence (I must say), the light turns back on. Waaah! A bull frog at sight! I yelled my lungs out! Too loud that I caught the attention of my Dad and my siblings nearby. Then a sudden tranquility as I unruffled myself and composed like a statue wary of the bull frog a feet far from me. I am still covered with soap suds! I have yet to rinse myself. I grabbed the dipper to surge an amount of water enough to douse the suds and more importantly, to produce less noise. Gods must be sleeping by then! The frog leaps closer to me. Ribbit! Ribbit! Oh my … I was overwhelmed with panic! Another leap then there goes an outburst of adrenalin rush; I’m out in a flash! I went out of the room exposing my entirety for all to gaze! (Yeah, I forgot to grab a towel but a dipper). I didn’t even guard my thingy with a dipper as that would only add up to a more disgraceful scene. (Ironic!) So I calmly walked my way to our room … unclothed. Spectators are in awe with dread and respect. (Besides, no one knows me.)

So there, end of my ignominy, shameful!

Since then, I am extremely repulsed by a sight of them. This rational fear of this harmless being is unbearable, not to mention, embarrassing. I honestly can’t stand looking at them on TV or in pictures, I don’t even dare like learning or talking about them because it only adds to my fear. The worst thing is that even when I drive, I cannot consciously step over one, I had countless of close road accidents by moving from their way.

Frogs are also a bad omen, some says. And I was also told that frog’s weewee (urine) may give you warts! I am totally terrified of these “harmless” creatures.
I now have a deep seated fear of frogs. The world was in love with frogs since Kermit. Everyone, that is, but me.

Frogs aren't even cuddly, they don't have a nice tenor voice, and they are really slimy. I even wonder why the Brothers Grimm’s “Frog Prince” draws a kiddie-wide attention by having a spoiled princess kiss a slimy eewy frog? They don't really invite kisses from fairy princesses! Well, perhaps this tale really is a story about facing fears and moving beyond being afraid of a frog and overcoming your phobia once and for all. But I doubt if I’d still l watch the upcoming Disney film adaptation “The Princess and the Frog” this year. What’s amazing is that the princess also transformed into a frog. Oh my … the “Royal Frogs”. What is happening?!

Still I can't find a way to overcome this fear as I am not even close to be willing to see this creatures.

I hate them big time!

As I was reading your description in that very small space with the frog I could not help myself but to imagine myself in that situation. It is very terrifying. I have no idea how I developed this fear. All I know is that if I a frog were to touch me by accident I will run like a little girl. Which is quite embarrassing since I'm a guy. If I see one I can't help it, I just freeze and try to move very slowly to some place "safe". This is definitely making reconsider going camping. I've never done it but those little creatures are all around.

thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment anonymous. Well, nice to know that I'm not alone in this very disgusting feeling. =) I also freeze and at times, can't help swearing as I really cant stand seeing them around. =) take care!

I also have a fear of frogs. Seriously I'm going to die if I were on your shoes during the incident. While reading, I can't help but to imagine your situation.

gosh, me too, more on toads. i just find the thing disgusting. i happen to pass by the local shopping center to see stuffed frog wallets and i turn all white and almost faint.

mine's a violent reaction to live toads, my initial reaction when seeing one would be to kill it on sight (!!!). unfortunately if i did (so many times before), it just leaves me more disgusted seeing guts all over.

I'm an avid camper and encounter them all the time. a control mechanism of mine is to say something like "i'm urinating, get out of my way!" it takes a while to muster the strength, but a satisfactory kick that sends them flying makes me feel better.

i used to play with toads when i was a kid though. =) yes, i did! and i enjoyed it under the rain.

but now, just thinking about them leaping over the grass. grrr makes me shiver with disgust, eery!

Thank you for sharing your story. I never liked frogs ever since I could remember. We were also told that it's pee could cause warts on the skin. Besides that, our family dog (Dalmatian) died from biting a poisonous frog. Not sure though if it's got the same effect to humans but the poor dog died in just 2 days after the incident.

If I see a frog it can induce vomiting. In a panic I once dropped my small child in a pool. My family can't understand it and get pretty angry at how it limits me living here in Florida.

OMG I thought I was the only one with this stupid fear of frogs! I've had it since I was a teeenager. Only thing I can think is I was dissecting one in biology in 10th grade. It's leg jumped when I touched a tendon. I freaked the frick out!!! Now I'm 36 and anyone I tell, (never tell anyone!) loves to torture me and laugh at my reactions. I am so scared that I stop breathing and my heart races! It's not pictures or stuffed frogs, only live ones. And I wouldn't dare get close enough to hurt one, because that would gross me out even more. It's a REAL fear!

I am deathly afraid of frogs. I have the most classic textbook case of ranidaphobia. I can't even look at a picture of a frog, or a nature show with frogs in it, even if it's just for two seconds. I will not ever walk in tall grass, or grass period during spring and summer months. I would NEVER swin in a lake or pond, not ever. Just like you even when i'm driving, if i even THINK I see one, I will close my eyes (as i'm driving, mind you) and brace myself for the impact of possibly feeling the slightest bump of the tire. When I get home late from work, my husband usually has to walk me from the car to the front door. Once my husband and I went to see a house for sale and the owners hadn't cut the grass, and my husband had to carry me over the grass, in front of the agent...embarassing, huh? yeah, I have a classic case of this phobia.

I am so happy to know I am not the only person with a fear of frogs. I grew up in the city, not really knowing what frogs were. When I was five, my family moved to the suburbs. my first experience with a frog was when I saw a bullfrog when my family was on a walk. Ever since then, I can not handle being around them. In 7th grade science I had to dissect one, which helped me become a little more comfortable around them. Still the live ones bug me. I try not to go outside a ton in the summer, if I do I avoid the grass. I just wish frogs didn't exist!

oh my god its so nice to know i'm not the only one. literally hate them so much. thinking about them can bring me to tears or want to be sick. one time i was in india and i had to use this wooden hut toilet outdoors and i locked the door, sat on the toilet and then i noticed a tiny bright orange and blue frong on the lock of the door which i had just touched and would need to touch again if i wanted to leave the cubicle which, obviously being a ranidaphobe, i did because there was a frog in there. i have never fully recovered from this incident.

I'm such a hypocrite about frogs! I think they're really cute, but only if they're 100 meters away on the other side of bullet proof glass. Where I live, they are literally EVERYWHERE and I'm so scared that they will try and jump into my mouth or my hair or somehow crawl under my skin. I won't go outside at night for fear of them and of stepping on them, because I would never wish to hurt them and can just imagine hearing and feeling the bones snap, also frogs actually make a sound like screaming when they are hurt. Even thinking about them being near me makes me dizzy, and my usual reactions to finding them in the house are hysterical crying, swearing and screaming. So good to know I'm not alone! Everyone I know teases me about it and will try and put frogs near me just to see my face. I know it's completely irrational and frogs actually are harmless, but I'm still phobic anyway!

Hi. I use to think that I was the only one that had this stupid fear. I'm a grown man with kids and I'm terrified of frogs. I use to play with toads and bullfrogs when I was young. After this one incident when I saw a cousin stuff a little firecracker into a bullfrog and blew it up. Since that day everytime I see one it terrifies me to the point of fainting.

Okay, my phobia has gotten out of hand now and i need to see someone about it. When i was young i used to play with frogs. I had a tadpole farm but one day i came back and they all died. I have a memory of watching a film where one was blended, a memory of me being very young and what i remember to be five thousand frogs coming at me at the same time from when we emptied the pond and i remember seing a few dead and dried ones on the road. I don't know when the problem started, but I can't look at pictures of them. I can't touch them or cross paths with them. But it's gotten worse over time.

First it was 'Okay, i see it, just avoid it' but then it just steadily got worse. Prom night was terrible. I was in these bazillion inch heels, sitting on a little grass mound next to the road having a heart-to-heart conversation with my prom date, some real touching stuff, when it was all ruined. I saw this little blob jump off of the path about five metres from us into the road. Bare in mind it was really dark, so terror factor goes up by a thousand. I got up and threw myself across to the other side of the road, regardless of traffic, screeching like a banshee. My date was looking so confused and then i pointed out the frog. He goes up to it and I scream at him that it's playing dead and it will hurt him. When he pokes it with a stick it jumps and he squeals like a little girl and joins me on the other side of the road like a spooked cheeta. I gotta type this all out before I pass out so I'm not giving a care about tenses. So it jumped towards the middle of the road towards us, so we run further away but into the road. Like bang in the middle too, having this stare down like it was an angry sabertooth. Thank the Gods my dad drove by then so we jumped into teh car and made a getaway.

Above is just one of my encounters. There are so many more, I have the worst luck. Another bad one was when my Dad opened the back door, which is right next to the cumputer, and one jumped in whilst i was on it. It jumped under the desktop and i yet again screamed bloody murder. My parents cant seem to comprehend the intensity of my fears of them because once my Dad had caught it he tried to make me hold it as if it would help me. I ran up the stairs, went into my parents bedroom, locked the door and barricaded it, stuffing the little gap under the door with their freshly cleaned and ironed clothes. I was in survival mode. I didn't come out for two hours. All i did was sob and scream at my Mum to go away because I was convinced it was in her hands and she was going to give it to me once i opened the door.
MrsDuckyFuzzles said…
The most recent event however has intensified my fear. I was dancing in teh rain because I'm strange and down to earth like that and once i reached the end of my path in the garden i decided to go back inside because it was getting late. Lo and behold, two frogs were in my way. I was paralysed, like a statue. I couldn't move. I just sobbed silently, scared any noises would alert them to my presence. I was there for about ten minutes until my Dad opened his window to see what the noises were. He came downstairs almost butt naked with a cover over his head and came to get me, but his presence made one jump away form him and consequently towards me. I opened the gate in an adrenelin rush and sprinted to the middle of the road. I know it's stupid but i seem to find roads a safe zone. Fucking roads. I'm a danger to myself. Dad'ds just standing there all flabbergasted as to why i ran away from him and then i sob that he made them come closer. So he kicks them away much to my absolute horror, comes to me and takes my hand. 'We're going to walk slowly inside okay Phillipa? I've got you the whole way, they can't hurt you.' he said. But then more adrenelin kicked in and i told myself that going slow gives them more oppertunity to pounce, so i left my dad there and sprinted like a ballerina (to ease footfall) and shut the door on him once i was back at the house.

I can't walk across the field from work at night anymore. I can't go out in the rain. I can't go to the outside fridge, I can't go to the sunlounge. I couldn't even go into the dogs food bag because it was in the sunlounge and i couldn't see in the bag well enough to know if one was in there or not. I had to pour it from a distance. I opened the door and screamed at my own reflection in a puddle of water thinking it was one of them today. I jump and jostle at every movement in my peripheral when either of the doors is open. Ranidaphobia is taking a serious hold on my life now.

Just now, when i let the dogs out whilst writing this? I saw one jump away from my running dogs into the cornere of the sunlounge right next to the fridge. My puppy tried to pick it up. I thank the gods that the one time she listens to a command it was today. I told her to leave it and she did. She's getting the biggest motherfucking treat i tell you.

I can't live like this. It isn't right.

Hi
I'm a young girl from Denmark and I believe that I have Ranidaphobia, but i'm not sure..
It started when i was on a class trip to the Czech Republic(this was in 6th grade and I am now in 9th grade). We were all out in the rainy forest, jumping over rocks, climbing mountains and so on, when me and my group walked past a lake where there was a bunch of frogs/toads on top of each other rolling around and jumping around. I had never, ever in my intire life seen something so scary as that! I was horrified of the site of them. Them one of the bigger boys from my class took me on his back and took me back to the hotel.
Ever since that i have been afraid of frogs/toad.
My symptoms:
When I am outside I double tjek the stones to see if they are frogs.
Every other of my dreams are about frogs.
I get scared from just seeing a picture of a frog and so on...
I hope someone can tell me if I have Ranidaphobia.. please! (:
take care out there..

Oh my goodness! I am not the only one!!! YES!!! I am soooo afraid of frogs! They are so ugly and scary little creatures. When I was little I went to the bathroom and sat on the toilet to do my business when all of the sudden I realized, sitting right next to my butt on the toilet seat was a huge frog!!!!! I screamed so loud and jumped up so fast, my mother came busting in the bathroom thinking I was being murdered. That alone was enough to justify my fear of frogs but my story is not over yet.....a few months later I was at my grandma's house and, again, went to use the restroom. Well there was a frog that decided to pop out of the toilet and hit my butt! That experience set me over the edge! and now and forever I will be deathly afraid of frogs! I honestly hate being outside at night, especially after rain, because I know they are out there! :(

I definately understand the feeling of real fear. I go into severe panic mode when I see a frog. Hypervenilation, cold sweats, racing heart, and black outs. I get the works and people love to tourment and play on my fear. It is real and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

Living in a tropical part of Australia, there are usually frogs everywhere. Mainly green frogs and small brown ones. When I was younger I had little to no problem with them and would sometimes play with the smaller ones out in the backyard. My fear only really came about a couple of years ago (I am a teenager) and has gotten worse over time! It started when the green frogs started crawling through a drain pipe, or through the window and sitting in the toilet bowl. The first time this had happened that I had known of was the worst. I was walking towards the toilet and caught a glimpse of something green sitting in the bowl, I turned back and saw the frog and when to walk away (rather, run away) but it was too quick and it jumped out and landed on my arm before falling to my feet. Now, whenever I go to the toilet I slowly make my way and have to crane my neck to see. The times when a frog are actually in there I would flip out and fall backwards, having to call out to someone to get rid of it. It doesn't at all help either that my family and I will be moving in a couple of weeks time to a house where there is about 10x more frogs.

According to an article, the fear of frogs often happens when seeing one die violently. When I was a teenager I went to shut my window (it was one you had to sort of pull in) and little did I know there was a frog sitting on the window sill. When I closed the window it squished the poor frog and its guts and blood was everywhere :( and I guess that's where my phobia started!

Reptiles and amphibians are the ugliest creatures in this planet! My fear of frogs started when my evil cousin thought stuffing a dead one inside my shoe and having me step on it until its gut popped out of its mouth was cool. I was 7 years old and I'm almost 22 now. It didn't help much when we had to move in a province where frogs were just everywhere, roads, shower, doors, windows, literally everyyywhere. I'm currently in university and I'm not sure how many times I've embarrassed myself by screaming my lungs out whenever I flipped a page with a picture of a frog or whenever my prof would put up a huge photo of a toad in the projector. NOBODY understands this fear unless they're going through it!!!! Most people think I'm overreacting when I'm actually going through a panic attack. It's been a decade since I've moved here in North America where it snows, no frogs can survive the weather here, so they are almost non-existent here. I'm going to a tropical country next month, the province where I used to live and that's the reason why I'm still up at 6:30 in the morning trying to search what to do when I encounter one. I'll probably die next month, so thank you all for sharing your stories. For once in my life, I feel normal.

I'm so glad to find out I'm not the only one. I've been terrified of them for a few years and my friends think it's hilarious. I literally hyperventilate and cry when I'm exposed to them. My friends take great joy in teasing my about it but they don't realise that it's actually a real fear. It's so annoying because you don't realise how many frogs are out there until you're scared of them!

I lived in Northern Aust as a child and was surrounded by green tree frogs and toads. I never feared them til one night in my teens when I sat on several large green tree frogs when I went to go to the toilet. Since then, my fear of frogs has been debilitating. I'm also ranidaphobic and the same thing happened to me when I was 10. I was about to take a bath in a stand alone bath room (the bathroom is outside the house) and it was still dark because its around 4:30 am. When I turned on the light, I saw this big rock (or so I thought) on the bathroom floor. I didn't paid much attention to it but when the bathroom floor became flooded, this huge bullfrog leaped from the floor and landed on my feet. I screamed like I was fighting for my life. What I felt was absolute terror. I hate frogs ever since.

I was around five years old, living in Missouri. I was in a swimming pool and I pushed open one of the filter covers. Five or six tree frogs were in there and they jumped on my face and chest. I am a 71 year old with Ranidaphobia and have had it my entire life. They are sickening, disgusting creatures that have spoiled Spring and Summer for me as well as working in ,my flower garden. I consider myself educated and intelligent so I KNOW they won't hurt me...it's just they make me sick to see the way they usually hop out and surprise you and even when they don't hop but just kind of crawl is enough to send me screaming. If one ever touched my skin I swear I would die of fright on the spot. AND....just a warning....it doesn't get any easier with age...trust me.

I'm not sure where or at what age this emotionally crippling fear or phobia of frogs started for me. I'm not scared of kermit the frog or pics of frogs really.. but one live and in person ? Forget about it.. I see one and I either move to a safe zone or run and on occasion can't move and just stand there unable to move .. either way I'm crying the entire time. It is truly a crippling emotional fear and phobia to have. I've seen one on my porch when I was coming home and backed away at a safe distance and cried til my neighbor came out 30 min later and moved it to a diff location. I understand frogs aren't harmful and they are good for the ecosystem but I do not want one close to me. I cried even reading some of your all's encounters , out of shear terror and panic and sympathy of knowing your fear and what it feels like. Bad news for me is .. I made a deal with someone recently that if they faced their fear of something they've had their entire life , I'd ... hold a frog for 1 minute. Facing their fear specifically is a two part process and today they completed the first half... I cried for two reasons . being proud of them and knowing I'm that much closer to holding something that completely cripples me emotinonally. I get it , they don't bite .. blah blah to the ppl who mock this phobia I wish I could smack you in the mouth , that isn't nice .. but it really is a true fear and phobia. I've held snakes , I'm not scared of heights .. but frogs....... Is just a completely diff ball game. Best wishes to all of you suffering with this real fear and phobia. Everyday I don't come into contact with a frog .. is a small victory for me. ;) Good Luck to all of you ! ;)

I absolutely can not stand frogs.. I don't go outside when its raining at night.. and If I do, I'm sure to tuck my pants in my socks and use a flash light..

I don't know when I developed this fear.. I remember about 10 years ago, as I was leaving the house, a frog jumped in.. I was in a rush, so I told my brother and sister to please get it out.. I came back, and forgot to ask them about it.. about 5 or 6 years later, I jumped up from bed, shaking and freaking out.. I asked my sister what happened to the frog.. whether they got it out or if it still was in the house.. she didn't remember.. I called my brother who was out of state to ask him.. and he laughed at me..

anyway, everytime I think about frogs, or see one.. or find myself walking near grass at night... I have to say "FROGS! FROGS! FROGS! FROGS!" tha'ts the only way I can calm myself down.. it lasts for about 30 minutes until the fear subsides but..

I absolutely hate frogs and rats... I would sooner wrestle with a bear than walk in the same hallway with a frog and a rat.. I would DIE!

I also hate flying and jumping insects.. they are too unpredictable. I'd rather a giant cannibalistic bird attack me than a fucking flying insect.. at least, I know the bird wants to eat me... and I can land blows at it.. but anyway, nothing matches my fear of frogs..

I need a frog repellent.. I would pay serious money

I can't imagine still having this phobia during my twilight years. =(
